APPLICATION FAQs

  • We review applications and send our decisions within two weeks of the application closing date. After that date you’ll receive an email from us with more details. You could be accepted for an pre-admission interview, added to a waitlist, or denied entry at this time.

If you are accepted for a pre-admission interview you will have a call with us to talk about your goals, career aspirations, availability to be in the program, and any challenges that could be a barrier to your ability to participate in our program. After all pre-admission interviews are completed you will be notified of your acceptance status. You may be added to a waitlist in case another accepted student drops.

We have a very limited number of spaces available both online and for our Studio Shadowship, and the application process is very competitive. If you don’t get in on the first try, please try again in the future!

  • Please understand we are a small team. At this time, we are unable to provide feedback on individual portfolios and application submissions.

Keep an eye out for workshops and other opportunities for feedback on your work!

  • For our Shadowship Program we’re looking for folks that have a good understanding of design software, such as Photoshop, Illustrator, AfterEffects, and Cinema 4D. We are not directly teaching you tools, so you’ll want to have a solid understanding of some of these programs. During the course we will provide you with a list of tutorials to help you build skills that you may not know yet.

  • Absolutely! Please have a digital portfolio for us to view. This can be a Demo Reel, PDF, Website, Behance, dedicated Art Instagram, or other digital submission of your work. Please follow the application instructions to submit your information and portfolio. Submissions by email will not be considered.

FAQs

The Program

  • Our Studio Shadowship program is a 12 week, focused animation training program that combines self-directed learning with an onsite studio experience. We provide learning opportunities that are fundamentally unchanged by time or medium and allow you to learn while surrounded by industry professionals and mentors.

Over the course of the program, you will work from a desk inside a studio, agency, or media arts organization and advance your skill sets by working through a series of prompts. These assignments are based on creative briefs developed by industry experts. We have several 1 and 2-week projects that you get to combine to create the program that makes the most sense for your career goals.

The briefs are designed to help you build your skills in different areas of animation and design. One-week briefs are very focused on a small set of key items that we want you to learn. Two-week briefs offer a little more time to work. We teach slightly more expansive topics that require you to focus on executing both design and animation. Throughout the program, you will have peer reviews, feedback from professionals, and chances to showcase your work.

You will also work together on two group projects during your time with us. These are an opportunity to learn how to collaborate and solve creative challenges together.

  • Instead of a traditional internship, our program is an opportunity for you to learn while you’re in a studio. Similar to job-shadowing, you get to see the inner workings of a studio and gain a deeper understanding of how the industry works. You aren’t there to work on projects for the studio. Instead, you’ll be working on our curriculum while being exposed to industry professionals. This is a great way to keep learning while you make valuable connections that could lead to future professional opportunities.

  • Nope! This is a focused training program for animators. The only similarity is that you work on your assignments while at a desk in a studio. This is so you can experience the inner workings of a studio, not to work on projects with/for them. It’s a great opportunity to make lasting and significant connections with top industry professionals within those walls.

  • When you work in a studio, you need to be a self-starter who can think outside the box in order to problem solve and deliver for the client. Our program is set up in a way that promotes and strengthens these characteristics. You also get access to mentors that can help you solve problems and challenge the way that you think about your work. You’ll leave the program with real industry connections that can lead to professional opportunities in the future.

  • Absolutely! As long as your equipment can fit within the space desk space the studio is providing for you to use and is not disruptive to daily studio operations, you can bring it. Please note, neither the studio or the Gunner Trade program are responsible for any lost, stolen, damaged, or broken personal equipment.

  • Host locations and participating studios will have basic equipment and software (Adobe Creative Cloud, Blender, Rive) on hand for you to use while you are in the program. Some workstations may have other equipment, such as Wacom devices for you to use.

Some locations may have extra seats available if you can bring your own personal laptop or equipment.

If you are in the online program you will need to provide your own computer and software.

Time Commitment

  • The in-studio program is 12 weeks long with no beaks. There may be days off for certain holidays.

  • Yes. Please apply again at a later date if you are unable to attend for the full length of the program.

  • Students are typically in the studio 4 days a week between the hours of 10 AM and 6 PM. Reasonable accommodations for work, disability, and other reasons can be requested and may be provided at the discretion of the program administrators.

  • Mondays - Thursdays are mandatory in-studio days unless other arrangements have been made. We expect you to be in the studio roughly 25-30 hours a week during the operating hours of the studio. These hours will vary based on your placement. Fridays there are no classes, but you are welcome to use the studio to work on your projects. You will also get time off for any holidays that the studio participates in.

Online Program

  • Item descriptionYes! We started our online program in the Winter of 2025. After a successful trial, we decided to make this another way for students to join us. The online program is great for students who can’t travel to a host studio, work full-time and need a more asynchronous schedule, or have other barriers to receiving an in-person education.

  • The curriculum, learning materials, and schedule is the same. The biggest difference is that you won’t get the same experience as being in a studio around other students and mentors. You will have access to our student Discord where you can chat with other students and online mentors.n

  • If you are in the online program you will need to provide your own computer and software.

Cost, Location, Travel, & Age Limits

  • Nothing! Well, almost nothing. There is no charge for you as a student to attend the program. You’ll need to be able to provide your own lodging, transportation, meals, and other expenses while you attend.

Online students will need to be able to provide their own copy of the Adobe Creative Suite or any other software of their choice at this time.

  • The studio or host location pays us a set fee for you to learn in their space. We also receive sponsorships and grants from businesses and foundations that help cover the cost of your spot in our program.

  • While it may be more ideal for people who live in these areas, we are open to out-of-area applicants if you can provide your own lodging and transportation during the 12 week program.

  • We’ll assign you to a studio that we think will fit your goals as an artist. The studio may not be your first choice. Keep an open mind. Remember, this industry is small. You’ll make valuable connections and gain experience wherever you go.

  • Yes. Students need to be at least 18 years old by the start date for the program they are applying for.

  • Yes. We currently don’t have the resources to assist with visas and other travel documents. You will need to provide your own Airbnb or other accommodations if you are traveling to attend our in-person program.

If you can not make these arrangements, the online program may be a good fit for you.
